A Review of the Psychoanalytic Play Therapy
Shin Suk-Ho

Abstract
It is common for a young child to express unconscious fantasy partly in play with dolls and partly in role play. From its beginning, child psychoanalysis has used fantasy play as a window to both the content and process of children¡¯s inner worlds. There are inevitable tensions between allowing play to emerge as a therapeutic process in its own right and the usual psychoanalytic emphasis on clarification, verbalisation, and interpretation within and about the transference. For many children, the very act of playing carries much of the therapeutic work aimed facilitating their return to developmentally appropriate and adaptive psychic functioning. This article describes psychoanalytic views in theory and practice as well as a clinical illustration from ¡¯therapeutic consultations¡¯ of Donald Winnicott.
